Before your arrival
How to get a Canadian phone number before you arrive
Choose a line with calls and texts, understand when it becomes usable, and arrange delivery before your journey.
The essentials
Before you order a Canadian number
- Number included
Check for a Canadian voice-and-text line, not only a data allowance.
- Timing confirmed
Use the delivery and activation schedule in your order.
- Overseas use
An assigned number does not guarantee texts will arrive abroad.
In this guide
To arrange a Canadian phone number from abroad, choose a plan that explicitly includes a Canadian number, order before your trip, and complete the required setup. An eSIM can be delivered by email, but not every eSIM includes calls or texts. Receiving a number before travel also does not mean the line can receive verification messages in your home country.
Choose a plan with calls and texts
“eSIM” describes how the SIM is installed. It does not tell you whether the service includes a telephone number. A data-only travel eSIM can connect maps and messaging apps to the internet without giving you a Canadian voice-and-text line.
If you want people in Canada to call or text you directly, look for a local number plus the calling and SMS allowances you need. CanadianSIM’s current prepaid and monthly newcomer plans include a Canadian number. You can compare the distinction in the guide to eSIMs with a phone number.
| Your task | What to check |
|---|---|
| Use maps, email, or internet calling apps | A suitable mobile-data allowance and coverage for your destination |
| Receive a call from a landlord or employer | An active Canadian voice line, with service where you are using it |
| Receive ordinary SMS messages | A Canadian number with texting service |
| Receive a bank or account-verification code | The sender’s acceptance rules, your line’s SMS support, and whether the line has service in your location |
Know what “before arrival” means
There are three different milestones: your order is processed, your number and SIM details are issued, and your line becomes usable on the network. They do not necessarily happen at the same moment.
CanadianSIM’s current monthly plan pages state that the eSIM QR code is emailed 24 hours before the selected arrival date. Activation is arranged around that arrival date. Use the timing in your order confirmation and keep the team informed if your plans change.
Do not plan an essential overseas verification around a number you have not received. Even after a number is assigned, receiving a text abroad requires service in that country and a supported message. A Canada-only plan is not a promise of overseas SMS delivery. If you need a number weeks before departure, ask CanadianSIM to confirm what your order can support before paying.
Choose the delivery method that fits your phone
- eSIM: email delivery for an unlocked, compatible phone. Check your exact model and regional variant first.
- Airport pickup: a pre-ordered physical SIM at Toronto Pearson, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, or Winnipeg. Confirm the location and collection instructions.
- Physical delivery: currently available to Canada, India, Brazil, and the Philippines. The plan page lists a typical total of 5–8 business days; allow for the delivery estimate shown for your order.
Vancouver and Montréal are not CanadianSIM pickup locations on the current list. Arriving there does not prevent you from using an eSIM; it changes which delivery method makes sense. See the six-airport collection guide for details.
Choose between a visit and a longer move
For a defined visit, a prepaid plan gives you a fixed period of service. CanadianSIM’s current options are 30 days with 95 GB and 90 days with 75 GB. Both include a local number, Canada-wide calling, and international texts. The 90-day data allowance covers the full 90-day period.
For stays of 90 days or more, compare the Rogers and Fido monthly offers. They have different data and hotspot features, and monthly billing continues until the service is cancelled. Do not choose only by the first checkout payment: for these monthly offers it is a deposit credited to the first carrier bill.
A practical ordering checklist
- Check the phone’s compatibility and unlock status.
- Enter an email address you will be able to access during your journey.
- Provide accurate arrival information and complete the official verification steps requested for the plan.
- Keep the order confirmation and QR instructions private. A QR code is used to provision your phone service.
- Install and enable the SIM following the supplied instructions, then test a call, a text, and mobile data when service is available.
For the detailed sequence, read the pre-arrival activation timeline.
Common questions about ordering from abroad
Can I buy without a Canadian credit history?
CanadianSIM advertises its pre-arrival newcomer offers without a credit check, and prepaid is another option. That does not remove identity, eligibility, or payment requirements. Confirm the current conditions for the plan you choose.
Can I keep my original number too?
Yes, where your handset supports both lines. A new Canadian number is separate from your home number. Keep the home account active if you need it, and check that carrier’s charges for using it in Canada.
Does a Canadian number guarantee that verification codes will arrive?
No. Services set their own requirements, and delivery depends on the sender, network, and line status. Keep another recovery method for important accounts where one is available.
