The essentials

What to know first

  1. Phone

Identify the exact device and confirm carrier support.

  2. Plan

Match the dates, countries and features to your trip.

  3. Arrival

Save instructions and a fallback before departure.

Use this checklist before travelling to Canada to confirm your phone, mobile plan and arrival arrangements. It works whether you choose CanadianSIM or another provider. Complete the checks with the actual phone and selected plan; a model name or an advertised data allowance cannot answer every question.

Download the one-page phone-readiness checklist (PDF) — printable, with checkboxes you can also complete in a PDF reader.

Your pre-arrival checklist

The web checkboxes are a convenience while this page is open. They do not submit your answers or save them to an account. Keep the PDF if you want a copy for your trip.

A quick reference for your phone

Start with the exact phone family
Phone family The useful distinction Read the model guide
iPhone 14 US eSIM-only versus regional physical-SIM versions. iPhone 14 SIM options
iPhone 15 Original sales market and keeping a home line. iPhone 15 SIM options
iPhone 16 / 16e The 16e has a separate Hong Kong/Macao exception. iPhone 16 SIM options
Galaxy S23 Exact model code and country-of-origin caveat. Galaxy S23 checks
Galaxy S24 Standard, Plus, Ultra and FE versions need precise identification. Galaxy S24 checks
Pixel 8 / 8 Pro / 8a SIM format, carrier unlock and the active-line combination. Pixel 8 checks

For other supported models, use the phone compatibility checker. The linked guides cite manufacturer information. Carrier approval and calling support still need checking separately.

Three distinctions that prevent wrong purchases

  • eSIM support is not carrier approval. Resolve the phone’s regional format, lock and network/calling compatibility separately.
  • US calling is not US roaming. Read the cross-border guide if the trip includes the USA.
  • A deposit is not the full cost of monthly service. Read the monthly payment explainer before choosing an ongoing account.

For travel writers, schools and arrival teams

You may share this checklist, link to it, or reproduce its checklist text with attribution to CanadianSIM and a link to this page. Keep the review date and the compatibility caveat. Do not imply that CanadianSIM has tested a particular reader’s phone or guaranteed their service. Manufacturer and carrier materials linked here remain their owners’ work.

Use the compact link card below in an article or pre-arrival email. It has no script, tracking pixel or form. Check the current page before reusing any plan-specific claim; the checklist itself avoids prices so it remains useful as offers change.

Review and limits

Prepared by CanadianSIM on October 16, 2026. The checklist organizes checks; it does not certify a device, grant eligibility, promise verification-code delivery or replace the provider’s order instructions. CanadianSIM sells mobile plans. Readers can use the checklist independently of a purchase.
