The essentials

What to know first

  1. SIM options

Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a have eSIM and nano-SIM options.

  2. Carrier lock

Confirm that another carrier’s service can be used.

  3. Two lines

Choose data, calls and SMS deliberately when keeping a home line.

Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8a support eSIM, with a nano-SIM option as well. You still need an unlocked phone and a Canadian carrier that supports the exact device and services you plan to use. The Pixel 8 family should not be confused with newer US models that have different physical-SIM rules.

Pixel 8 family: SIM-format reference
Model SIM options Remaining checks
Pixel 8 eSIM and nano-SIM Carrier unlock, exact version and Canadian network/calling support.
Pixel 8 Pro eSIM and nano-SIM The same checks apply; Pro does not guarantee carrier features.
Pixel 8a eSIM and nano-SIM Confirm 8a specifically and your intended active-line combination.

Google’s Google: Pixel SIM support covers eSIM and physical SIMs; its Google: Pixel dual-SIM setup explains supported dual-line arrangements.

Check the sales market and carrier lock

A Pixel purchased from a carrier may have different lock status from an unlocked retail device. Ask the seller or original carrier before departure. A working home SIM does not demonstrate that a different carrier’s SIM will be accepted. See Google: using another carrier.

Keep the data and calling choices deliberate

Google supports dual-SIM use on suitable Pixels, with the active combination depending on the phone and carrier. Use Settings → Network & internet → SIMs to review the installed lines and which one is used for mobile data, calls and messages. Follow the current on-screen instructions and provider setup guide.

For example, you might keep a home number available and use the Canadian line for data. That does not make the home line’s roaming free. Review its calling and SMS costs and any automatic data switching before travel. Installing the new eSIM also does not port your home number.

A working data connection is only one check

Confirm native calling and SMS if the plan includes them. Rogers: device and calling compatibility notes that imported devices can have feature limitations even where their frequencies match. Ask about voice over LTE for the exact handset. Do not use a successful internet speed test as proof that calls will work.

Choose service after the phone check

Start with the phone compatibility checker, selecting Pixel 8, 8 Pro or 8a precisely. Then compare a prepaid visit package or monthly service for a longer stay. Save the confirmation and activation instructions before leaving. Keep the eSIM installed during troubleshooting unless the provider directs otherwise.

Questions before you buy

Can I keep a physical home SIM while adding a Canadian eSIM?

That can be a supported arrangement on this family. Check the phone, both providers and the required active-line combination.

Does Pixel 8 support every Canadian 5G or calling feature?

Do not assume that. Confirm the exact handset with the intended carrier.
