Understand your data
Unlimited data in Canada: what happens after your allowance?
Compare high-speed data allowances, speeds after the limit, hotspot access, and how long each allowance lasts.
The essentials
Check your data allowance and limits
- High-speed data
Compare the allowance with your own recent mobile usage.
- After the limit
Check whether data slows, stops, or needs an add-on.
- Hotspot separate
A large phone allowance does not automatically include tethering.
In this guide
“Unlimited data” does not always mean unlimited high-speed data. Check the high-speed allowance and the rule that applies after it is used. Some plans continue at reduced speeds; others have different limits. Do not assume that every Canadian plan, or every CanadianSIM offer, works the same way.
Read these three parts of a data offer
| Part of the offer | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| High-speed allowance | How much data is included before any limit or speed change? | This is the amount to compare with your likely use. |
| After-allowance rule | Does data slow down, stop, require an add-on, or incur an extra charge? | The word “unlimited” should be read with the actual plan terms. |
| Allowance period | Is the amount for a month, 30 days, or the full 90-day package? | The same number of gigabytes can cover very different lengths of time. |
For example, CanadianSIM’s current Rogers offer explicitly includes 100 GB of high-speed data followed by data at reduced speeds. That wording supports an unlimited-data description for this particular offer. It should not be copied onto another plan simply because the other plan also has a large allowance.
What the current CanadianSIM allowances cover
| Plan | Advertised data period | What to check before choosing it |
|---|---|---|
| Rogers 100 GB monthly | 100 GB per monthly allowance period; reduced-speed data afterwards | Current speed terms, billing dates, and hotspot needs |
| Fido 75 GB monthly | 75 GB on the monthly offer | Current rules after the allowance; the offer does not include hotspot |
| Prepaid 30-day / 95 GB | 95 GB for the 30-day package | Data-expiry rules and any options if the allowance runs out |
| Prepaid 90-day / 75 GB | 75 GB for the entire 90-day package | It is not 75 GB each month; no hotspot is included |
Read the current monthly plan details and prepaid comparison before paying. Where the page does not clearly answer what happens after an allowance is used, ask support rather than treating silence as a promise of free continued data.
Estimate your use from your own phone
Your recent mobile-data use is a better starting point than a universal claim that every traveller needs the same number of gigabytes. Check the period covered by the phone’s usage counter; some counters continue until you reset them.
For a simple estimate, divide a comparable period’s usage by its number of days, then multiply by the travel days. Adjust for what will change: more navigation, fewer hours on home Wi-Fi, photo backups, or video calls.
Illustrative example: 12 GB used over 30 days is 0.4 GB per day. The same pattern over 14 days would use about 5.6 GB. This is arithmetic, not a forecast: more streaming or fewer Wi-Fi connections could change the result substantially.
Look at which apps used the data. Download maps and entertainment over Wi-Fi before leaving, and review whether photo backup and software downloads can wait. Those choices can matter more than buying the largest allowance available.
Hotspot is a separate feature
A large data allowance does not grant permission to share it with a laptop. The current CanadianSIM Rogers monthly offer includes hotspot. The current Fido offer and the prepaid eSIM packages do not.
If you will work from a laptop, confirm tethering before considering the data total. Also check whether the plan fits your stay and signup circumstances. A monthly newcomer offer for a longer stay should not be presented as the automatic solution for every short holiday.
What reduced speed means for everyday use
Reduced-speed service may behave differently from the high-speed connection you used earlier in the month. Tasks that send large files or need sustained bandwidth can take longer or work less reliably. Do not rely on a reduced-speed allowance for an important video meeting without checking the actual speed terms and your requirements.
A high-speed allowance is also not a guarantee of a particular speed everywhere. Device compatibility, local coverage, signal conditions, and network demand affect the connection. Check the places you will use the phone, especially on a route outside major cities.
Questions about unlimited data
Does unlimited data mean there can never be an extra charge?
No. Read the terms for data, calls, roaming, and add-ons separately. An unlimited domestic data feature does not cover every type of mobile use.
Does the 90-day prepaid package renew 75 GB every month?
No. The current package lists 75 GB total for 90 days. Compare that full-period allowance with your likely use.
Should I buy a plan that lasts longer than my trip?
It can make sense if the total cost and features suit you. You do not need to use every included day. For a short visit, see choosing an eSIM for two weeks in Canada.
