The first thing the College of Nurses of Ontario wants from you is a Canadian phone number.
Not your WhatsApp number from Manila. Not your sister's number in Mississauga. A real Canadian mobile line in your name, that goes on your CNO registration, that hospital HR can text when your shift moves, that the Ontario health card office can use to confirm your appointment. The same goes for the regulators in Manitoba and British Columbia, and every province pulling Filipino nursing talent into the country.
If you are a Filipino nurse, midwife, healthcare aide or medical lab tech reading this in Manila, Cebu or Davao, and your visa cleared, this page is for you. See the plans or read on.
Why the number has to be sorted before you fly
Canadian healthcare onboarding runs on SMS. Hospital HR sends shift bids and the onboarding checklist to a Canadian number. Telemedicine portals need one for two-factor login. RBC, TD, BMO and Scotiabank text a code when you open the newcomer account holding your first paycheque. Landlords run credit checks against a Canadian callback line. The CNO sends fee reminders by SMS.
Land at Pearson at 11pm on a Sunday and try to buy a SIM the next morning, and you have already lost days. Most onboarding steps queue behind a +1 number, and most have deadlines. A nurse starting a Monday 7am shift cannot afford a Tuesday carrier-store appointment.
That is why the SIM ships to you in the Philippines before you board.
What you get
CanadianSIM is a Canadian-owned mobile reseller based in Toronto, powered by Rogers. Our parent company, Wireless DNA Inc., is in its 28th year, and 200,000 customers have activated with us since the brand launched in 2020.
CanadianSIM’s current Rogers SIM-only monthly offers are 100 GB for CA$40/month and 120 GB for CA$50/month, plus taxes. Both include a Canadian number, Canada-wide calling, international texts and hotspot. The 120 GB offer also includes Canada and USA roaming. These newcomer offers are marketed for stays of 90 days or more; review eligibility and current terms. The plan payment at checkout is a deposit credited to your first carrier bill. The travel eSIM apps sell data without a voice number. That does not work for hospital onboarding.
The credit story most newcomers miss
Filipino healthcare workers in Canada are usually on a PR track, and Canadian credit history is the gate to the car loan, the credit card, the lease and eventually the mortgage. The fastest way to start building it is a postpaid phone plan in your name, paid on time. Prepaid travel eSIMs are invisible to the credit file; six months on one leaves you with a thin file when the bank underwriter looks. A postpaid line activated the week you land starts the clock immediately.
Picking up at the airport
If shipping does not fit your timeline, collect on arrival at Toronto Pearson (Terminals 1 and 3), Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax or Winnipeg. Pre-book online, show your passport and confirmation email, and walk away with an active line in about ten minutes.
A nurse's first 48 hours in Toronto
She booked from Cebu two weeks before departure. The SIM arrived in her mailbox four days later. She put it in her phone; the line activates 24 hours before her arrival date.
Wheels touch down at Pearson at 9:40pm. Customs by 10:25. Phone on in the arrivals hall, signal locks in, and she has a Canadian +1 number before she clears the doors. By 11pm she is in an Uber that verified her on a one-time code. At the hotel she opens the newcomer banking app she pre-applied for; the two-factor code lands and the account goes live. By morning she is texting hospital HR, confirming her 7am orientation, and submitting her CNO registration update.
