The essentials

What to know first

  1. Original market

The original sales region determines the relevant SIM-format rule.

  2. Exact model

Check the model name; 16e has a regional exception.

  3. Carrier support

Confirm unlock and Canadian calling support separately.

Check the exact iPhone 16 model as well as its sales market. The iPhone 16e has a different Hong Kong/Macao exception from the 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. This guide covers iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max; iPhone 16e is covered separately in the table. Carrier unlock and Canadian network support are separate from the SIM format.

SIM options by original sales market

iPhone 16: regional SIM-format reference
Originally sold in Model SIM guidance
United States iPhone 16 family including 16e eSIM only; no physical-SIM tray.
Canada, UK, EU, India and other usual international versions iPhone 16 family Generally nano-SIM plus eSIM. Confirm the original model and its settings.
China mainland iPhone 16 family including 16e Use the physical-SIM route; these models do not have the same eSIM support as the international version.
Hong Kong / Macao iPhone 16, Plus, Pro and Pro Max Two nano-SIMs; do not order an eSIM on the assumption that the international model’s support applies.
Hong Kong / Macao iPhone 16e Apple lists 16e among the eSIM-supported exceptions. Check this model separately.

Apple documents the Apple: SIM trays and US models and Apple: regional dual-SIM models. Use the original sales market, not the country selected in your phone’s language settings. Apple: iPhone 16 specifications also provides device specifications.

Check the phone you actually own

  1. Open Settings → General → About and record the model name and model number. If it is imported, ask the seller which market it was made for.
  2. Check Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means the phone is unlocked; otherwise contact the original carrier. See Apple: checking carrier lock.
  3. Look under Cellular or Mobile Data for Add eSIM. An EID or that menu is useful evidence, but it does not prove Canadian carrier approval.
  4. For a physical-SIM version, confirm the tray and nano-SIM option. A physical card does not bypass a carrier lock.

Do not treat the iPhone 16e as every other 16

The name is close, but the regional rule can differ. In Hong Kong or Macao, Apple identifies the 16e as an eSIM exception; it does not give that same rule to the standard 16, Plus, Pro and Pro Max sold there. For a China-mainland 16e, use the physical-SIM route. Select the exact model in the checker rather than a similar family name.

If a reseller cannot identify the original market, pause the purchase decision until it can. Changing the phone’s region setting or downloading a carrier app does not establish that its hardware version supports a different SIM format.

Confirm Canadian calling, then choose the plan

Ask the intended Canadian carrier to confirm support for the exact model, including voice over LTE. A compatible frequency list alone may not establish calling support on an imported device. Rogers: device and calling compatibility explains that distinction.

Use the phone compatibility checker for the next check. Then compare prepaid service for a visit or monthly service for a longer stay. Follow the order’s installation and activation instructions; adding an eSIM profile and starting a paid service are different steps.

Questions before you buy

Will every iPhone 16 bought abroad work in Canada?

No blanket guarantee is possible. Check its original market, carrier lock and the intended carrier’s support.

Will changing to a physical SIM fix a locked phone?

No. Unlocking and SIM format are separate issues.
